Mexico is the Latin American nation immediately south of the United States. It is the fifth largest nation in the Americas, with a population of over 113 million. Mexico has a long history, much of which predates the arrival of Europeans, during which great civilizations, such as the Maya and Aztec arose.
Pre-Columbian civilizations made numerous advancements in such areas as mathematics, astronomy, and medicine, leaving behind magnificent temples. The Aztecs, the last of the pre-Columbian civilizations, built an empire that stretched across most of central Mexico. In 1519, the Spanish arrived, led by Hernan Cortes, who conquered the Aztecs by 1521, creating the colony of New Spain and constructing Mexico City on the ruins of Tenochtitlan.
Mexico - The New Spain
New Spain gradually expanded northward into what is now the southwestern United States, establishing Santa Fe in 1598. Mexico, as part of New Spain, remained a colony of Spain until 1821. Insurgency began in 1810, and by 1821 the Treaty of Cordoba granted Mexican independence. In 1824, the first Republican Constitution created a democracy, which gave way to the dictatorship of Santa Anna. In the 1860s, Mexico was briefly ruled by France, followed by decades of rule by Porfiro Diaz. The Mexican Revolution (1910-1929) led to the creation of the modern state, albeit one that was ruled by a single party until 2000.
